(Nitrous Oxide / Inhalation Sedation)

WHAT IS INHALATION SEDATION?

It is technique to help you to cope with fear and anxiety during dental treatment.

You breathe the Nitrous Oxide + Oxygen mixture through a small mask that sits over your nose. This helps patients relax during treatment without making them unconscious, and can avoid the need for intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia.

WHO CAN BE SEDATED?

Both adults and children.

For successful inhalation sedation, you must be able to breathe comfortably through your nose and understand & cooperate. This technique can be very helpful for patients with special needs or those who tend to gag a lot during dental treatment.

IS INHALATION SEDATION SAFE?

Inhalation sedation is a very safe way of providing sedation because you breathe a high level of oxygen (at least 30%) during treatment. However, it may not be suitable for everybody and the dentist will check carefully to make sure that you can have sedation safely.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT MY APPOINTMENT?

Before your treatment starts, we will usually check your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen level. These may not all be necessary in children.
Your oxygen level will be checked continuously during your sedation by placing a small clip over one of your fingertips.
You will first start to breathe pure oxygen through a small mask over your nose. The nitrous oxide gas is then added gradually to the oxygen.
You will be watched carefully and treatment will begin only when you are fully relaxed.
We will keep you in the surgery after your treatment until we are sure you are ready to go home.

WILL THE SEDATION CHANGE MY TREATMENT?

No.

Once you are relaxed, your treatment will be exactly the same. You are still likely to need local anesthesia to make your teeth numb. Inhalation sedation does help to relieve pain as well as anxiety so injections will be more comfortable.
